Why now?

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, is quoted as saying “change is the only constant in life.” He could not be more correct. My latest change, the thing that has caused me to start this blog, is learning Kubernetes. I’ve been working in technology for over 20 years now, going from massive single purpose physical servers, to large scale virtualization and datacenter consolidation, to the multiple cloud providers, and now to containerization.

I’ve been using docker for many years now, but Kubernetes is the next step. It’s becoming the way that newer software is hosted on a large scale. In my home lab (datacenter), I had no less than 7 virtual servers running different iterations of docker, with different load balancers in front of them. This is in addition to many more legacy application running on dedicated virtual machines. It’s has become too much like work keeping up with all the different generations of things living in my datacenter. It’s time to clean it all up and streamline it.

This website, along with several other websites that I host for organizations that I am involved with, are now hosted on a Kubernetes cluster. Is that good? I don’t know. It’s different, and I have learned a lot along the way that will help me with supporting our large scale infrastructure that we host in multiple datacenters, and public cloud providers.

Over the years, I have tried to do blogs and never really was able to keep up with them. I’m going to give it a try again. I work on a lot of interesting projects, at work, church, organizations I am involved with, and personally. I am envisioning this as a place to share those projects and provide ideas or templates for anyone wanting to do something similar.

Some of the things that I work on fairly regularly that will likely be content for this site:

  • Datacenter / public cloud technology (either large scale at work, or small scale at home)
  • Live streaming setup for broadcasting church
  • Home Automation

Till next time…
